Bill splitting apps at a glance: eleven criteria

Eleven points on which bill splitting apps differ. Paid features and known usage limits are marked. Where the assignment to a plan is not clearly documented, we say so. The general limits of the free versions are in the cost comparison. The numbers lead to the sources; all comparison points are in the detailed comparison.

Cashinator in action: four examples

How settling up works in typical groups, with what it costs and what to look for in bill splitting apps.

Cashinator app: an expense of $1,610 is split among the members of the Smith and Jones families Cashinator app: settlement by household, the Jones family pays $39.71 to the Smith family

Example 1 · Families and households

Two families, one holiday home, one transfer between the families

The Smith family travels as four, the Jones family as three. In Cashinator both families are set up as households: every person belongs to their household and is still recorded individually, including the children who pay nothing themselves. The households appear in the balance as rows of their own and can be expanded. If someone should carry less, a child half for instance, they get a default share of 0.5. In the settlement Cashinator calculates per household: only one payment is needed between the two families, the Jones family pays one amount to the Smith family, instead of many small payments going back and forth. With more than two households, at most one payment is needed between any two households. If you want to be exact, you can also settle within the families afterwards.

What it costs
Households and default shares are included in every trip at no extra cost. Anyone who joins and has already used their free first trip needs a further trip for €1.99, unless the trip has a PLUS group licence. Then only one person pays; the people who join pay nothing.
What to look for
Whether the app can group people into households, such as one family with two children and one with three, and still keep track of every person individually. Cashinator does this at no extra cost. [8] Splitwise describes splitting by shares per expense [18], Settle Up one shared member with a larger share [7], Kittysplit with Super Kitty one participant standing for several people [3] [2]. With Settle Up and Kittysplit the family appears as one entry; with Splitwise both people stay individual members and one of them gets the shares for both on each expense. For Tricount and Splid we found no vendor information on this.

Cashinator app: a recurring expense that is added automatically every month

Example 2 · Flat share

Enter rent and streaming once, booked every month

Rent, electricity and the streaming subscription are set up once as recurring expenses; Cashinator then adds them automatically at the times you choose. You scan the weekly shop from the receipt, and a budget shows how much is left. When someone moves out, you deactivate them instead of deleting them. Whoever moves in joins via QR code.

What it costs
Recurring expenses, budgets and deactivating people are included at no extra cost. A group has no time limit. Flatmates follow the same rule as trips: their own free first group, otherwise a further group (€1.99) or the PLUS group licence. Capturing the weekly shop with Express Scan uses the scan quota (5 scans free per device, see example 4).
What to look for
Whether recurring expenses come at no extra cost and whether people can be deactivated for new expenses instead of being deleted. Cashinator does both, at no extra cost. [2] [3] Splitwise offers recurring expenses for free [10], Settle Up with Premium [4]. On its comparison page, Tricount names adding each recurring bill manually [9]. Deactivating people is also described by Settle Up [7].
Cashinator for flat shares
Cashinator app: setting a travel budget, in total and per person

Example 3 · Shared travel pot

Everyone pays in, the pot pays, the settlement does the rest

On a sailing trip everyone pays €200 into the shared pot at the start. Groceries and harbour fees are paid straight from the pot: under “Who paid?” you pick the pot, and its balance goes down automatically. If more is spent than paid in, Cashinator shows how much still has to be paid in. Whatever is left at the end is included in the settlement automatically. A budget warns you before money gets tight, and expenses can be added offline.

What it costs
The shared pot, several pots too, budgets and offline entry are included at no extra cost.
How it works in Cashinator
Payments into and out of the pot are entries of their own. The pot’s balance is on the home screen, with several pots too, and the settlement includes leftover money automatically. [2] For shared pots in other apps we found no vendor information.
Cashinator on board

Example 4 · Restaurant and shopping

Snap the receipt, tap the items, done

Express Scan reads merchant, address, date, time, currency, tip and the individual items with quantity and price from the photo. Cashinator suggests the category from your trip’s categories, including ones you created yourself. It checks whether the recognised items add up to the total and points out possible gaps; before saving, everything can be edited. Then you tap who had what, the app splits the rest among everyone, and the tip follows the split of the expense. According to our release notes [3], the scan copes with different languages and scripts, for example with receipts from Japan or China; how well a receipt is read depends on the photo.

What it costs
5 scans are free per device. The unlimited trips package includes a one-off allowance of at least 20, the unlimited PLUS licence at least 50; the scans belong to the buyer, not to the group. More come as scan packs, one-off and without a subscription; the app shows sizes and prices before you buy. A scan only counts when you save, and receipts that cannot be read cost nothing. Express Scan needs an internet connection. Without a scan, expenses can be split equally, by shares, percent or amounts, without using the quota; you can distribute items that way too if you add them up yourself and enter the amounts.
What to look for
These are three different things: attaching a receipt photo, having the receipt recognised and assigning items to people. Cashinator offers all three. [6] [7] Splitwise recognises receipts with Pro, items included [3], and in its comparison with Tab, Tricount describes entering them by hand [11]. Assigning items is also possible with Settle Up [3] [1] and Splid [5].
More on Express Scan

When does Cashinator fit?

  • You want to get going right away: nobody creates an account, not even the people you invite; scanning the QR code is enough.
  • Families or couples travel together: set up as households, at most one transfer is needed between two households, and every person stays an individual entry.
  • You split receipts by item: Express Scan reads items and tip, you tap who had what.
  • You need a shared pot, a budget or recurring expenses: the pot’s balance is always visible, the budget warns you, rent and subscriptions are added automatically, at no extra cost.
  • You pay in many currencies or travel without a connection: over 160 currencies, add expenses offline and sync later.
  • You would rather pay once than subscribe: the first trip is free, more cost a one-off from €1.99, no ads, no subscription.

Also in Cashinator: shared pot (several pots) and budget with a warning, step-by-step balance calculation, payment methods with card fees, location via GPS, solo mode for your own expenses, deactivating people, copying groups and restoring deleted expenses.

When another app may fit better

  • You want to request or send money right from the app. Tricount sends payment requests with a payment link [15], Splitwise offers Pay by Bank and reminders [19] [20].
  • You want to take over your data from Splitwise. Tricount [6], Settle Up [7] and Kittysplit [6] offer an import.
  • You want roles with read or edit rights at no extra cost. Settle Up names owner, edit and read [2] [8]; with Cashinator, permissions management is part of the PLUS group licence.
  • You are looking for an app without any paid tier. Tricount has no paid tier [14]; extra services such as a travel eSIM cost money. The app is owned by the bank bunq and offers its account and card [21] [22] [7].
  • You want everyone to work in the browser. Kittysplit runs in the browser without an account [5], Splitwise [1] with an account; Settle Up has a web app too, where groups can be viewed via a link [5] [1]. Cashinator focuses entirely on the app for iPhone and Android and deliberately does without a browser version: usability and development are geared completely to the smartphone, which almost everyone has with them on holiday anyway. To work with the figures on a computer, export the expenses as a CSV file, for example for Excel or Google Sheets [10].

What does each app cost?

All six apps offer free use. The differences lie in the limits of the free version (daily limit, number of people, ads, first trip only) and in whether you take out a subscription or pay once. Prices in the German App Store as of October 2026; they may differ on Google Play and in other countries.

Cost of the six apps
Cost Cashinator Splitwise Tricount Settle Up Splid Kittysplit
Free use The first trip or group per device, with no time limit and no ads, with all compared features that Cashinator offers except permissions management (PLUS), plus 5 Express Scans. Joining also counts as a trip. [4] Up to 4 expenses a day, Pro lifts the limit [3] [4] [22] [23] All features without a paid tier, no daily expense limit; up to 50 people per group [14] [12] [9] Everything except the Premium features, with ads [4] [3] [10] Free to download and usable without sign-in; the feature list in the store marks only the Excel export as an in-app purchase, the vendor states no further limits of the free version [5] [6] Any number of groups and expenses, up to 9 people and one currency per group [2] [5] [4]
Payment model One-off purchases, approx. €2 to €18, no subscription [4] “Splitwise Pro” subscription, approx. €3 a month or €30 a year [3] [22] [24] No paid tier. Tricount is owned by the bank bunq and offers its account and card in the app [21] [22] [7] [16] Subscription per person (Premium, approx. €4 a month or €22 a year) or one-off payment per group for all members (Group Premium, approx. €6 for one week up to €180 for lifetime) [4] [1] In-app purchases, approx. €3 to €4 [5] One-off purchase per group, approx. €3, no subscription [2]
Example: six people, one trip One week, one currency, everyone adds expenses €0 if everyone uses their free first trip (joining uses it up too). Otherwise each person without a free trip pays €1.99, up to €11.94 for six people, or one person buys the PLUS group licence for everyone: €2.99 as an upgrade of the trip, €4.99 as a new PLUS trip. [4] [12] €0 as long as each person adds no more than 4 expenses a day. After that Pro as a subscription or an annual plan with a Trip Pass (Pro features for one trip group, 30 days). [3] €0 [14] €0 with ads. Premium for all members of the group: Group Premium, a one-off €5.99 for one week; longer costs more. [4] [1] €0 to start. Whether the free version is enough for six people on one trip, the vendor does not say; otherwise an in-app purchase of €2.99 to €3.99. [5] €0 with one currency. For a foreign currency or receipt photos one person pays a one-off €2.99 for the group, split among everyone. [2]
Prices German App Store One more trip, a one-off €1.99 (valid for one device), unlimited trips €7.99 (for all devices of the same store account). PLUS group licence, where people who join pay nothing: new trip €4.99, upgrade of the current trip €2.99, unlimited trips €17.99. [4] [12] Pro for one person €2.99 a month or €29.99 a year. Annual plans are also available for two people; they include a Trip Pass: Pro features for the members of one trip group for 30 days. The German App Store also lists €5.99 and €47.99, without a billing period. [3] [22] [24] No in-app purchases. Extra services cost money, such as a travel eSIM or a 2.5% fee when a payment request is paid by credit card. [23] [8] [15] In the German App Store: Premium per person €3.99 a month or €21.99 a year. Group Premium, a one-off payment per group: €5.99 for one week, €9.99 for two weeks, €14.99 for one month, €29.99 for two months, €44.99 for one year, €179.99 lifetime. Prices on Google Play and on the web may differ. [1] [4] App Store: “2 Gruppen” €2.99, “Splid Plus” €3.99. Google Play: €2.99. The vendor lists the Excel export as an in-app purchase but does not say which product includes it. [5] [6] Super Kitty a one-off €2.99 per group, not per person. One person buys the upgrade; the amount is booked as an expense and split within the group. [2] [12]

Frequently asked questions about expense splitting apps

What is a bill splitting app?

A bill splitting app such as Cashinator records who in a group paid for what, splits the costs and shows at the end who owes whom how much. Cashinator is made for trips, flat shares and groups of friends, with no account, no ads and no subscription. Such apps are also called expense splitting or cost sharing apps; others are Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up, Splid and Kittysplit.

Which bill splitting app is free?

With Cashinator the first trip or group per device is free, with no time limit, no ads and no subscription; each further one is a one-off purchase from €1.99, and with the PLUS group licence one person pays once for everyone. The other five apps offer free use too, with very different limits: Tricount has no paid tier; extra services such as a travel eSIM cost money. Kittysplit is free for up to 9 people with one currency, Splid’s vendor does not state the limits of its free version, Splitwise allows up to 4 expenses a day without Pro, and the free version of Settle Up contains ads.

Which app works without signing up?

Cashinator works without signing up, for the people you invite too: it needs no account, no e-mail address and no password, scanning the QR code or tapping the link is enough. Tricount, Splid and Kittysplit also work without an account. With Splitwise, the help centre names signing up as the first step. With Settle Up, signing in with Google, Apple or an e-mail address is offered; whether the app requires it to create or join a group, the vendor does not say explicitly.

Which app recognises receipts automatically?

Cashinator recognises receipts with Express Scan: it reads merchant, address, date, time, currency, tip and the individual items with quantity and price from the photo and suggests one of your trip’s categories, including ones you created yourself. Then you tap who had what. 5 scans are free, then there are packs; you check and edit everything before saving, and scanning needs an internet connection. Splitwise offers automatic receipt recognition too (with Pro, items included, in the mobile app). In its comparison with Tab, Tricount describes entering receipts by hand. For Settle Up, Splid and Kittysplit we found no information from the vendors on recognition, but Settle Up and Splid let you assign items to people. More: receipt scanner.

What does a group trip with six people cost?

With Cashinator a trip with six people costs nothing if all of them use their free first trip (joining counts as a trip too). Anyone who has already used theirs pays a one-off €1.99, or one person buys the PLUS group licence for everyone: €2.99 as an upgrade of the trip or €4.99 for a new PLUS trip. The others then pay nothing. For six people, one week and one currency, with everyone adding expenses, the trip also costs nothing with Tricount, Kittysplit (with one currency), Splitwise (as long as each person adds no more than 4 expenses a day; Pro lifts the limit) and Settle Up (with ads). Group Premium for all members costs a one-off €5.99 for one week with Settle Up in the German App Store; for Splid the vendor does not state the limits of the free version. More in the cost comparison.

What is a good Splitwise alternative without a daily limit?

Cashinator has no daily limit, no ads and no subscription, and nobody needs an account. Currency conversion, charts and search, which Splitwise offers with Pro, are included at no extra cost, plus 5 free receipt scans. The first trip per device is free, further trips are a one-off purchase from €1.99. Tricount (no expense limits, up to 50 people per group) and Kittysplit (free for up to 9 people and one currency) have no daily limit either. Without Pro, Splitwise allows up to 4 expenses a day. If you need the web app, payments from the app or expenses without a group, you find them with Splitwise.

Which app suits couples and families?

Cashinator groups people into households, for example one family with two children and one with three; every person stays an individual entry, and children can be set to a default share of 0.5, for instance. In the settlement at most one payment then flows between two households, even when several families or couples travel together. Splitwise, Settle Up and Kittysplit also describe solutions for couples and families: Splitwise splitting by shares per expense (for a couple where one person pays for both), Settle Up one shared member with a larger share, Kittysplit with Super Kitty one participant standing for several people. For Tricount and Splid we found no vendor information. More: families and households.

Which expense splitting app works offline?

Cashinator records expenses offline and syncs them as soon as you are back online, on a sailing trip for example; inviting and joining, Express Scan and exchange-rate updates need internet. Splitwise, Tricount, Settle Up and Splid also let you add expenses offline; Splid also has purely local groups. Kittysplit writes on its comparison page with Splid that it lacks offline use directly on the device; it does not describe whether entries made without a connection are cached.

Which app converts foreign currencies automatically?

Cashinator converts over 160 currencies at no extra cost, with daily rates and, if you like, your own rate per expense, such as your bank’s. Tricount, Settle Up and Splid also convert amounts for free; Settle Up also names its own rate per transaction. With Splitwise conversion is part of Pro, with Kittysplit part of Super Kitty (a one-off €2.99 per group).

Tricount or Splitwise: what is the difference?

Tricount focuses on free sharing of group expenses. Splitwise additionally offers a web app and recurring expenses; however, free use is subject to a daily limit, which Splitwise Pro lifts.

If you want recurring expenses and PDF or CSV exports without signing up, Cashinator is a suitable alternative: no ads and no subscription. The first trip or group is free; for further groups and additional receipt scans there are one-off purchases.

Can I split costs without installing an app?

Yes. On the Cashinator website there is the online expense calculator for a quick one-off settlement, right in the browser. The Cashinator app is available for iPhone and Android; it suits trips and groups in which everyone keeps adding expenses, offline too. Kittysplit (without an account) and Splitwise (with an account) also run in the browser, and Settle Up has a web app too.

Who made this comparison and how current is it?

The comparison is published by Cashinator (publisher: Daniel Mikus, Berlin) and is not an independent test. It is based on the vendors’ public information and their listings in the German App Store and on Google Play, evaluated on 30 September 2026, open points accessed again on 2 October 2026. We did not try the other apps ourselves. Features and prices may have changed since. Found a mistake? Write to us and we will correct it.

First trip free

Fancy a trip without the maths?

Cashinator suits you if you want to settle up as a group without an account and take families, receipts and a shared pot along. Create a group, invite friends via QR code, type in or scan expenses. Cashinator, fondly called Cashi by our community, does the settlement. No account, no ads, no subscription, and the first trip or group on your smartphone costs nothing, for as long as you like. What further trips cost is in the cost comparison.

Cashinator app: an expense with a receipt photo

Method and sources

This comparison is published by Cashinator and is not an independent test. Research as of , open points accessed again on . Publisher: Daniel Mikus, Berlin (imprint).

  1. One comparison list for all. It is based on Cashinator’s features and on the features the other vendors document, and it includes features Cashinator does not have. Each row is a task you can get done with the app. Different tasks are kept apart, for example receipt photo, receipt recognition and items, conversion and your own rate, shares per person and households. We left out rows for which mostly nothing reliable could be documented for the other apps or which matter little when choosing an app.
  2. Features of all vendors. The tables include features Cashinator does not have, such as imports, roles at no extra cost or use in the browser.
  3. Availability and cost kept apart. The status says whether a feature exists: Yes, Partly (with a functional limitation, such as a workaround, only on one platform or in one region), No or Unclear. The cost says what it costs: free, only with the named purchase or subscription, as a quota, or plan unclear. “Free” only appears where the vendor assigns the feature to its free version: because there is no paid tier, because its pricing page names it as free, or because its feature list in the store shows it apart from the paid extras. A missing price is not enough; where the assignment is not clearly documented, it says “plan unclear”. The general limits of the free versions are in the cost comparison.
  4. Evidence rules. For the other apps, vendor websites, help centres, pricing pages, release notes, store descriptions, unambiguous store screenshots and the vendors’ replies in the stores count. Vendor blog posts count as long as newer product pages do not contradict them. Texts from the apps’ translation files, third-party pages and user reviews do not count. The only exception: Splitwise does not state the billing period of its prices; that €2.99 is monthly and €29.99 annual comes from a Wüstenrot guide of 22 January 2025. Statements about Cashinator rest on its public pages and store listings and additionally on the behaviour of our own app.
  5. Missing documentation is not a No. “No” only appears where the vendor itself says the feature does not exist. Where no description exists, the status is “Unclear”. We derive no advantage for Cashinator from it.
  6. No overall score. We award no points and name no winner. The vendors document in very different detail, so a ranking would not be meaningful.
  7. No hands-on tests. We did not try the other apps ourselves. We evaluated these versions of the store listings:
    • Cashinator: iOS 8.0.1 of 25 Sept 2026, Android updated 25 Sept 2026
    • Splitwise: iOS 26.9.1 of 20 Sept 2026, Android updated 16 Sept 2026, web app
    • Tricount: iOS 14.1.0 of 13 July 2026, Android 14.4.0 of 28 Sept 2026
    • Settle Up: iOS 3.18.2 of 20 Sept 2026, Android updated 29 Sept 2026, web app 6.2.0
    • Splid: iOS 1.9.1 of 4 May 2026, Android 1.5.1 of 23 Aug 2025
    • Kittysplit: iOS 2.4.0 of 10 Sept 2026, Android updated 10 Sept 2026, web app
  8. Limits. Features can differ between iOS, Android and web and may have changed since the research date.
